Phak Pheun Counsel opened in Bangkok's Phaya Thai district with a single intention: to create a place where people navigating difficult family circumstances could receive careful, unhurried legal counsel without feeling processed or hurried past their concerns.

The name — which translates loosely from Thai as "friend counsel" or "companion guide" — was chosen deliberately. It reflects a view that a legal adviser in family matters is not simply a technician but someone who walks alongside a client through a period of change, offering clear information and steady support as decisions are considered.

The practice focuses exclusively on family law. This is not a firm that moves between commercial work, property disputes, and family matters depending on what the week brings. Our attention, our continuing education, and our knowledge of how Bangkok courts and relevant authorities actually operate — all of it is directed at the specific circumstances that families face.

We work with a small number of clients at any given time. This is a deliberate operational choice, not a constraint. It means we can give proper attention to each file, return correspondence promptly, and sit in a meeting for as long as the client needs without watching a clock.

Our founding principle is that family law advice should be available to people before they reach a point of crisis — not only after. A first conversation is designed to be informative and low-pressure, so that clients leave with a clearer picture of their position regardless of what they choose to do next.

Bangkok's population includes both Thai nationals navigating family law under the Civil and Commercial Code, and a significant community of long-term foreign residents whose family circumstances are often subject to additional complexity — questions of jurisdiction, the recognition of foreign court orders, and the application of bilateral treaties. Our practice has experience with both.

The Phaya Thai area, where our office is located, has long been home to a mix of families — local and international, established and newly formed — and the kinds of family situations that arise here reflect the full range of what Thai family law addresses: dissolution of marriage, child custody and access arrangements, division of property following a significant change in household composition, and the preparation of protective measures when a domestic situation has become difficult.

Our view is that the most useful thing a family law practice can do is to help a client understand their position clearly before making decisions, rather than afterwards. The cost of a consultation is a known, manageable amount. The cost of proceeding without a clear picture of the available options is often considerably higher — in time, in emotional resources, and sometimes in financial terms as well.

We do not view our role as one of advocacy in the adversarial sense. We work with clients to identify what outcomes are most important to them, and we advise on the most direct, least disruptive path towards those outcomes within the framework of Thai law. Where court involvement is necessary, we manage that process carefully. Where it can be avoided, we will say so plainly.
